Wayne Rooney's father and uncle have been bailed pending further inquiries after being arrested over an alleged football betting scam.

Wayne Rooney Snr, 48, was held earlier on Thursday when police swooped at his home in West Derby, Liverpool.

Eight other people, including the Manchester United star's uncle, Richie, 54, and Liverpool-born Motherwell midfielder Steve Jennings, 26, were also arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud.

Merseyside Police said the arrests were the culmination of a joint operation with the Gambling Commission into "suspicious betting activity".

An earlier statement from Merseyside Police read: "Detectives have today executed warrants at 10 addresses across Merseyside and Glasgow and arrested nine men as part of an investigation into suspicious betting activity.

"The arrests are the culmination of a joint operation with the Gambling Commission and the nine who have been arrested for conspiracy to defraud are being interviewed by detectives.

"Those arrested are a 29-year-old from Bootle, a 48-year-old from West Derby, a 54-year-old from Norris Green, a 26-year-old from Croxteth, a 22-year-old from Kirkdale, a 31-year-old from Litherland, a 68-year-old from Fazakerley, a 36-year-old from Kirkby and a 26-year-old from Glasgow.

"The investigation relates to a match between Motherwell and Hearts on December 14 2010."

Soccer - Lennon backed to face Arsenal
Aaron Lennon should have recovered from a groin injury in time to play in Sunday's north London derby against Arsenal at White Hart Lane, a game Harry Redknapp's team are 11/1 with bet365 to win 2-0. I cannot see Everton winning this game even with the home advantage in the Merseyside derby. Both teams breaking even with the goal difference. Everton haven't really managed to strengthen the squad they had from last season and they have lost Arteta to Arsenal who was their key playmaker. Liverpool however can be very strong this season if they manage to kick on.

Blackburn v Man City - Man City Win @ 1.57 & Over 2.5 Goals @ 2.10
This bet isn't really that hard to predict and is some what of a cop out, you don't need me to tell you that Man City are stronger than 90% of other teams in the league and Blackburn is one of them. This is why I have coupled the bet with the over 2.5 Goals @ 2.10, if Man City get in the flow of things once more they could destroy Blackburn on their own turf turning even more of the home fans onto the Blackburn players backs.

Soccer - United told to wake up
Sir Alex Ferguson has warned Manchester United, 7/1 with bet365, to tighten up if they want to win the Champions League this season. Soccer - Mancini shuts door on Tevez
Carlos Tevez's Manchester City career could be over after he appeared to refuse to take to the field during the 2-0 Champions League defeat at Bayern Munich. Citizens head coach Roberto Mancini was furious with the Argentinian, whose actions overshadowed a result which left City 14/1 with bet365 to win the Champions League at the first attempt. You can see the dressing room starting to split in the Man City squad, I really hope it doesn't as it has started with such promise of a new team challenging for the title. It makes me angry how players throw a strop just at being subbed, come on...grow up, you're being paid to do a job, if the gaffer feels that you are not for filling that requirement you get subbed or dropped simple. No one player should be bigger than the club and this needs to be stamped out. If Mancini gets the players behaving and the team back on track I can see them kicking on and putting in a good shout for the Premiership title. Let's see how they do this weekend against Blackburn.

The Baggies seem to be struggling to get fired up so far this season only picking up 3 points in a lucky win against Norwich. However I think Albion will put in a good defence showing but struggle to score goals yet again while they seem to continue to play the out of favour 442 formation. Wigan v Tottenham - Tottenham Win @ 1.90
Tottenham picked up last weekend with a good solid performance against Liverpool. The disappointment of being knocked out of the Carling Cup to Stoke midweek will be short lived as Harry will see it as more of a relief not having another round of fixtures to play ontop of all the Europa League games that he see's as an inconvenience. The odds aren't great but I see this as a clear Tottenham win and is worth a big chunk of cash to more or less double you money. Well that's it for the moment people.
